Guide

What to check

A practical used-car buying checklist covering documents, MOT history, cold starts, leaks, tyres, brakes, test drives and negotiation evidence.

Before you travel

Ask for evidence before committing time and fuel. A helpful seller should be able to send basic documents and service proof.

  • MOT history and latest recorded MOT mileage.
  • V5C details, VIN plate photo and seller identity.
  • Dated service invoices, not only a stamped book.
  • Proof for known weak-point repairs where claimed.

At the viewing

Start from cold where possible. Look for leaks, warning lights, smoke, uneven tyres, brake wear, suspension knocks and poor accident repair.

  • Check oil, coolant and visible leaks.
  • Inspect tyres, brakes, lights, body panels and underside condition.
  • Test all keys, windows, locks, infotainment and warning lights.

During the test drive

A useful test drive is not about speed. It is about smoothness, temperature behaviour, braking, steering, clutch, gearbox and warning lights.

  • Listen for knocks, whining, rattles or misfires.
  • Check braking vibration, steering pull and clutch slip.
  • Do not ignore warning lights or vague explanations.

Negotiation points

Missing evidence is not the same as a failed car, but it should change buyer confidence. Price unknown weak-point work as risk or walk away if the seller blocks inspection.
